I don't know how much this has floated around the wedding circles, but if you haven't seen it yet, you should! Especially if you're in the thick of making your invitations.
I have a hunch nearly every bride goes through a "make the invites" roller coaster like this -
1. Catalogue all your favorite invitation examples - show to your fiancé
2. Fiancé doesn't like any of these ideas - try to think outside the box (puzzles, songs, tattooed goldfish)
3. Sulk for a while - this is hard stuff!
4. Just get it over with already (your first intuition was probably best, anyways)

I'm on step 4 of this plan for save-the-dates. Now we get to start all over again for invitations. [sigh]
